A Brief History Of The Building |
"RATSKELLER WEIMAR" is located in the town house – a building with a centuries-old history.
1432 Landgrave Friedrich der Einfältige (Friedrich the Naive) gave the piece of land to the town council as an open inheritance. The plot already housed a cellar with a public bar and a sales outlet on the first floor. The clear intention was to developed a store and a tavern “for the benefit of our town”.
1526 Beginning of the construction of “a good and solid building”. In the following period, a lot was altered and completed. The premises of the tap room were also extended.
1583 The town house were also used as a town hall and was labelled as the “Neue Rathaus” (New Town Hall). In Goethe’s time, the town house was a location for great festivities, masquerade balls and stage performances, in which Schiller, Anna Amalia and Carl August were involved.
1800 A building alteration took place of the house, which was still used for balls, concerts, performances and speeches. It was the gathering place of signifcant persons the likes of Franz Liszt, H. von Fallersleben, Peter Cornelius, Bonaventura Genelli, Friedrich Preller. Hector Berliotz, Anton Rubinstein, Friedrich Hebbel and Ernst Rietschel were also guests.
1945 Due to the effects of the Second World War, the beautiful Renaissance building of the town of Weimar lay in ashes.
1971 The house was reconstructed in its former glory and since then also housed a restaurant in its historic cellar vaults, which is most popular and well-frequented by Weimar’s residents and visitors to the town. As of late the Ratskeller has gradually altered its appearance. Private management of the restaurant made it possible to abandon the resting days and to constantly provide guests with food and drinks like Thuringian dishes and exquisite specialities from opening time until closure. Various wines of regional, national and international origin round off the wide product line. After installing a bar, it is even possible to have a cool beer fresh from the tap. Popular events like the annual ceremonial tapping of a bock beer barrel, sparkling wine social gatherings on sunday mornings, monthly wine tastings and specialities tastings have become a good tradition.
1991 During excavation works, the entrance to the historic cellar underpass was discovered. This tunnel connected the town hall with the town house in the past. The underpass is expected to be accessible again and thus will be another sight worth seeing of the town of Weimar.
